Congressman Alex X. Mooney’s Statement on Judiciary Committee Advancing Articles of Impeachment

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV02) released the following statement:

“Today, the House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to advance Articles of Impeachment against President Trump. Far from launching a serious inquiry with any semblance of fairness, the America people witnessed a partisan witch hunt.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Washington Post on March 11, 2019, ‘I’ve been thinking about this, Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.’

Speaker Pelosi went back on her word because every Republican member of Congress (and two Democrats) voted against opening impeachment proceedings and all Republicans opposed advancing the Articles of Impeachment in the Judiciary Committee. In fact, the only bipartisan thing was the opposition to this meritless impeachment.

The campaign to impeach President Trump started the moment he was sworn into office. On Jan. 20, 2017, the Washington Post wrote, ‘The effort to impeach President Donald John Trump is underway,’ and indeed it was.

Who can forget when freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib, only hours after she was sworn into office, declared, ‘We’re gonna go in there and we’re going to impeach the motherf—er.’

This vote is one of the most shameful moments in our nation’s history and sets a terrible precedent. Instead of wasting time and taxpayer dollars on a ridiculous impeachment inquiry, it is time for Democrats in Congress to focus on issues that matter to all Americans.

I will continue to stand with President Donald Trump as he delivers on the conservative promises he made to the American people”, said Congressman Mooney.
