Congressman Mooney & Congresswoman Carol D. Miller introduce legislation to designate the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Clarksburg as the “Irene M. Keeley United States Courthouse.”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) and Congresswoman Carol D. Miller (WV-01) introduced H.R. 6975 to designate the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Clarksburg as the “Irene M. Keeley United States Courthouse.”

This legislation is supported by the entire West Virginia Congressional Delegation with Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin introducing companion legislation in the Senate.

Judge Keeley was appointed by President George H.W Bush in 1992 as the first woman selected as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, a position in which she served for over 30 years.

Congressman Alex X. Mooney said of the bill, “I would like to express my thanks for Judge Irene Keeley’s decades of judicial service. As a mother, educator, and first woman judge for the Northern District of West Virginia, Judge Keeley exemplifies hard work, perseverance, fairness, and dedication to justice. I am proud to introduce this bill to rename the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in her honor. Judge Keeley’s service will continue to inspire West Virginians.”

“Judge Keeley has been a trailblazer for West Virginia. As the first woman appointed to be a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, she set an incredible example for future leaders across the state. I can think of no better way to honor her than by dedicating the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in her name. I thank Judge Keeley for her decades of service to our state and know that her legacy will inspire the generations to come,” said Congresswoman Miller.
