Congressman Alex X. Mooney Statement on H.R. 1

WASHINGTON – Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) today issued the following statement on H.R. 1:

“Today I voted against H.R. 1, the “For The Politicians Act,” which amounts to a federal takeover of elections. It mandates practices nationwide which are prone to fraud, such as ballot harvesting, universal mail-in voting and same-day registration. It automatically grants felons the right to vote and permits ballots to be requested online or over the phone.

“H.R. 1 is opposed by pro-life groups such as West Virginians for Life. The pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List says: ‘H.R. 1 would dramatically alter First Amendment protections by imposing onerous and unworkable regulatory standards on the ability of pro-life voters and the pro-life community to discuss policy issues with elected officials and the public.’

“In this legislation, the government would institutionalize taxpayer funding of federal campaigns through a six-to-one funding match up to $200 dollars per individual donation. This allows big government to funnel taxpayer money to politicians’ campaigns through increased federal fines on businesses and corporations.

“Speaker Pelosi and her liberal allies should not dictate how West Virginia runs its elections. This power grab would undermine ballot integrity and restrict the voice of each individual citizen in our election process,” said Congressman Alex X. Mooney.
