WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) announced Nicholas Reid Shirley of Martinsburg has been offered acceptance into the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Mr. Shirley was nominated by Rep. Mooney and selected for appointment by the congressman’s 2022 Service Academy Review Board for West Virginia’s Second Congressional District.
“I am pleased to nominate Nicholas for the United States Naval Academy as I know he has a strong future ahead of him. He is a nominee who represents West Virginia’s finest men and women who choose to serve our great nation,” said Rep. Alex X. Mooney. “Nicholas’s unwavering respect for America is exactly why he would be an outstanding addition to the United States Naval Academy. I wish him the best of success.”
Nicholas Reid Shirley is a graduate of Spring Mills High School in Martinsburg. Nicholas plans to continue his academic career through an engineering major. Nicholas will be able to purse his passion of giving back to those in need and is honored to represent his country through a military academy.
“Becoming an officer would be a tremendous honor and would fulfill a lifelong dream of mine,” said Nicholas Reid Shirley. “Moreover, I want to surround myself with people who will push me to work harder and be a better version of myself every day as I will push them to be the best versions of themselves. I strive for excellence in everything I do no matter what the task is. I know that an Academy is where I am meant to continue my educational career and start my military career.”
Nominations are based on academic merit, moral character, scholarship, leadership potential, physical aptitude, career goals and motivation. Admittance to any of our nation’s service academies is highly competitive, with a limited number of cadets accepted each year.
