CHARLESTON – Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) today announced that three organizations in Kanawha County, West Virginia have received over $750,000 from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for service and volunteering, to support AmeriCorps VISTA projects.
“I’m happy that AmeriCorps has awarded these funds and resources to organizations in Kanawha County,” said Congressman Mooney. “These projects will benefit the organizations greatly by providing volunteers to assist in their missions to fight poverty, support education and advance economic development in the Kanawha Valley.”
While serving, AmeriCorps members in the VISTA program will tackle local challenges facing the community, including hunger, poverty, educational programs, and small business support. This investment will support up to 41 AmeriCorps VISTA members per year.
In addition to the awards announced today, AmeriCorps will also provide more than $270,000 each year in education scholarships for the AmeriCorps VISTA members supported by this award to assist in college expenses, vocational training or student loan repayment.
