Congressman Alex Mooney Hosts Telephone Town Hall on Coronavirus Response in West Virginia

MARTINSBURG – Today, Congressman Alex X. Mooney (WV-02) hosted a Telephone Town Hall with constituents from throughout the Second Congressional District of West Virginia to provide an update on the coronavirus response. Congressman Mooney was joined by representatives from the West Virginia Senate, West Virginia University (WVU), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the West Virginia Small Business Administration (SBA).
 
“I’m glad over 5,000 constituents joined my Telephone Town Hall on the coronavirus. I was proud to have expert guests on the call, and together, we answered a range of important questions from food shortages to antibody testing. It was incredibly valuable to hear so many voices from across my District tell their unique stories,” said Congressman Mooney.
 
Joining Congressman Mooney were the following distinguished guests:
  • Dr. Tom Takubo, West Virginia Senate Majority Leader, R-Kanawha, and practicing physician
  • Dr. Matthew Simmons, Infectious Disease Expert at WVU
  • Paul Axelson, IRS Congressional District Liaison
  • Kim Donahue, West Virginia SBA Charleston Branch Manager
The town hall served as an informative discussion on the coronavirus response in West Virginia, outlining the resources available to small businesses, healthcare providers, and veterans, among others. Congressman Mooney also announced the ways in which the Trump Administration has delivered unprecedented aid to West Virginia. In less than 10 days in April, the federal government delivered the following:
  • 12,200 N-95 facemasks
  • 61,700 surgical masks
  • 1,600 eye and face shields
  • 2.7 million surgical gloves
Congressman Mooney also reported that due to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the SBA has issued over $1.7 billion in loans to over 14,842 West Virginia small businesses. These loans are designed to keep people employed during the crisis and prevent small businesses from closing permanently.
