WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCHS) — U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., blocked an attempt by House Democrats to remove President Donald Trump through the 25th Amendment.
House Majority Leader Steney Hoyer, D-Md., tried to pass the resolution Monday through unanimous consent. Mooney rose to object the request.
Mooney, who represents W.Va.’s 2nd District, said in a statement that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “should not attempt to adopt a resolution of this magnitude without any debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.”
“It is wrong to have sent members of Congress home and then try to adopt without any debate a precedent-setting resolution that could imperil our Republic. The U.S. House must never adopt a resolution that demands the removal of a duly elected president, without any hearings, debate or recorded votes,” Mooney said.
After Mooney blocked the unanimous consent resolution, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she would bring the resolution to the House floor for a vote Tuesday if it failed to get unanimous support Monday, giving Vice President Mike Pence 24 hours to respond.
House Democrats also are expected to hold a vote to impeach Trump this week.
